Oliver Bassett Cross is a contemporary painter whose work bridges the gap between classical literary tradition and modern psychological depth. Drawing significant inspiration from Joris-Karl Huysmans' Decadent masterpiece À rebours, Oliver explores the tension between the organic world and the curated, "artificial" interiors of the human mind. His practice is a deliberate act of translation — taking the dense, atmospheric themes of classical texts and reinterpreting them through a sharp, contemporary lens.

Oliver's formal journey began at The Art Academy in London, where he completed his Art Foundation, before moving to New York City to further refine his technical skills and conceptual approach. This dual exposure to the rigorous European tradition and the vibrant energy of the American contemporary scene continues to inform the duality of his work.

Oliver first gained public recognition as a contestant on Sky Arts' Portrait Artist of the Year, demonstrating his ability to capture character under the pressure of the national spotlight. A self-driven artist, he independently funded and launched his debut solo exhibition at Bateman Street, Soho — a milestone that showcased his capacity for both creative production and curated storytelling. His work has also been featured in several prestigious group exhibitions at The Mall Galleries with "Discerning Eye".

At the heart of Oliver's work is a fascination with the "refined aesthetic." Much like Huysmans' protagonist, Des Esseintes, Oliver views the canvas as a space to construct a world more vivid than reality. By layering classical influences with contemporary perspectives, he creates pieces that feel both timeless and modern.
